Dear Sir or Madam,
On Oct 12, 2012, I filed a police report after being sexually molested at the MTR platform in Admiralty station (case #12057566).
Because of this I have become more aware of the volume of cases of women being sexually molested while riding on the MTR in Hong Kong. Many cases go unreported. I feel that it is finally time the MTR to take the steps to assure the safety of women on its trains. Many countries have taken actions including Japan and Taiwan to create women protected areas on the railway and in the train in the form of Women Only cars, and loading areas. It is time for Hong Kong to meet what is becoming an international standard.
We have heard in the past arguments of cost and inconvenience on the part of MTR in implementing such plan. The MTR is one of the most efficient transport system in the world but there is no excuse not to protect women’s safety. Cost should not be a compromise in context of the safety of your passengers. It should be noted that the United Nation charter for Human rights dictates that every human being should feel safe in their environment, the MTR has a responsibility to also deliver on this charter.
The fact remains, many Hong Kong women do not feel safe riding in your trains. The inclusion of women only cars will be a great step towards women feeling safer, on top of giving them actual safety. Along with this however is a need for higher security, more cameras and high definition cameras place in strategic areas to catch criminals and so become a deterrence. This is a cause and an issue I am quite close to now, and feel quite strongly and I will stand behind until progress is made.
I trust that you will take women safety and well being serious and look forward to making this happen for a safer Hong Kong.
Yours truly,
